UPDATE: A wait list has been started for local families in need to apply for their school-age children to receive free new school shoes through the Community Steps program.
The program, a partnership between the Mountain Iron Fire Department (MIFD) and United Way of Northeastern Minnesota (UWNEMN), with funding support provided by the St. Louis County Family Services Collaborative, is in its second year and will once again provide low-income Iron Range families with free new school shoes.
“We were proud to support these efforts last year and hope to once again help local children start their school year off on the right foot,” said UWNEMN Executive Director Erin Shay.
MIFD’s Laura Anderson spearheaded the effort last year and is excited that it has grown this year. Up to 120 selected students will tour the MIFD, shoe shop, and enjoy a community dinner from 5-8 pm on August 24, August 31, or September 12.
“Firefighters join the fire department to prevent fires but also to serve their community,” Anderson said. “Programs like Community Steps are another way firefighters serve community while engaging with families.”
To qualify, families must be under the 200% Federal Poverty Guidelines/Receiving SNAP, MFIP, or Reduced or Free school lunches. Applications are due August 22nd and can be submitted online by clicking HERE - or families can call 218-929-1625 or email phoenix.laura18@gmail.com to get a paper form.
